The Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup

26/4/2022

Porsche Motorsport and innovation are two words often said together. It will therefore come as no surprise that Porsche have turned their decorated racing history towards the new world of Esports, forming a partnership with iRacing to create The Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup. The Supercup challenges 40 of the world’s most elite simracers to compete for a $100,000 prize and the right to be called the best in the world. Drivers race in their virtual Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars across many classic circuits that have been replicated on the iRacing service.

In early April, PESC (Porsche Esport Supercup) drivers took to the world-famous Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Canada. The event is split into two races, traditional qualifying determines the grid for the sprint race. The top eight drivers from the sprint then start the feature race in reverse order.

Following a successful pole position start, Dayne Warren found trouble at the beginning of the sprint race, falling to ninth place after the opening lap. Apex Racing Team’s driver, Kevin Ellis jr. from Great Britain took a hold of the lead, closely followed by Zac Campball and the two teammates, Sebastian Job and Graham Carrol of Oracle Red Bull Racing Team. This racing order remained right up to the final lap where in a fierce on track duel, Campbell fought past Ellis to take the victory through the final chicane. Following a late accident involving Alejandro Sánchez (SDK Gaming) from Spain, Warren’s luck was somewhat restored as he moved up into eighth position to take the chequered flag.

With the top eight from the sprint starting the feature race in reverse order, Warren would now have the opportunity to undo his earlier sprint race misfortune to undertake the 20-lap event from pole position. Making excellent use of his advantage, the Australian driver’s exceptional start helped him to hold the lead and calmly fend off his pursuers Salva Talens (E/MSi Esports), Pinto and Benecke. Further down the field in fifth place, Ellis made his way past Carroll, who lost his sixth place to Job shortly afterwards. Just before the flag, the sprint winner Campbell concluded with a mighty retaliation and moved his virtual 911 GT3 past Job securing P6. In this formation, the front runners wrapped up the dramatic feature race on the 4.361-kilometre Grand Prix circuit: Warren was celebrated as the winner!

Famed across the world as one of the most spectacular circuits, The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps will host the Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup (PESC) on 23 April 2022. If you would like to see how the infamous corners of Eau Rouge, Raidillon and Blanchimont play out in the next round of this global Esports championship live action can be viewed on iRacing or via Porsche’s YouTube and Twitch channels.
